There are recordings that announce themselves boldly on first hearing, and then there are those that wait you out. Tunes for the Soul belongs squarely to the latter camp. On first listen, Sean Patrick Reidy’s collection of pipe- led tunes comes across as comfortably traditional—well played, tastefully arranged, and pleasant enough to enjoy without demanding too much attention. But give it a second and third spin, and the record quietly opens its hand.
