It was particularly shocking news that came
through last week that Jean Blanchard had died. His name has been synonymous with traditional French
music since the 1970s and there has not been a time since the revival of the central French bagpipe when he has not been at the centre of the action and his influence cannot be overstated. I am very grateful to Jon Swayne and Eric Montbel, both equally influential individuals in their own right, who have, at very short notice, written their reflections on Jean.
