In 2023, desperate for an Early Music fix, I booked onto Historically Informed Summer School (HISS), held the week prior to the Bank Holiday. I’d heard about HISS many times in passing, but had never had an opportunity to go. Well, unable to get to our usual festivals, I decided to give it a go and decamp to Bishop Burton Agricultural college near Beverley. The music played is mostly Renaissance and Baroque, with some Medieval creeping in when no-one’s looking. It’s all very accessible – Handel going off on one it is not!
