Moving through the history of the Asturian gaita through the 20th Century, we need to divide the time into three periods. Firstly, the early part of the century up until 1936 (the start of the Spanish Civil War); then the second under the Franco regime (1939-1975) and finally the political transition from 1976 onwards which commenced after Franco’s death and also brought with it broad cultural changes into which the gaita was swept.
