New Highland Bagpipe Tutor

The Piping Centre, 30-34 McPhater Street, Cowcaddens, Glasgow, G4 0HW, is launching a pioneering bagpipe learner-teacher resource: The Highland Bagpipe Tutor Book A Step by Step Guide as Taught by The Piping Centre

PIPES AGAIN LEAD THE WAY WHEN it comes to teaching music, the ancient art of Highland piping is out in front ... with a hi-tech multimedia teacher-learner support package.

The Piping Centres tutor book constitutes a breakthrough in music teaching support. The Highland Bagpipe Tutor Book A Step by Step Guide as Taught by The Piping Centre is more than a book. The 'book' is just one part of a clever, hi-tech learner-teacher resource package that turns practice from prolonged and lonely toil into stimulation, challenge and interest. A CD-Rom lets learners pace their practice and match their finger movements to those of leading pipers by following detailed video clips on their computer screens. Learners read, hear and see the music as they improve their playing and learn music theory. They also are told about tunes histories, contexts and composers: narratives that add interest and promote learning. They learn how to look after and get the best from their instrument. From the CD-Rom, teachers can print out theory worksheets, progress charts to keep track of their students development, and certificates to reward it. In this, the packages recognises the partnership of learner and teacher, and sets out to enhance that relationship.

The package takes a carefully staged , step-by-step approach that embodies the experience of some of Scotlands top pipers; the late Pipe Major Angus MacDonald, Colin MacLellan, Roddy MacLeod, Gordon Walker, Dougie Pincock, Greg Wilson and others. It represents four years of determination by The Piping Centre to put together the best possible learning support tool, taking full advantage of the technology of the moment. Have a look in the music shops, said the Centres director of piping, Roddy MacLeod. I don't think anything quite compares with this not for any musical instrument. It's great that Scotlands national instrument should accomplish something like this.

The Highland Bagpipe Tutor Book A Step by Step Guide as Taught by The Piping Centre retails at £25.
